The Dirty Dozen
Robert Aldrich had already become known for his French movie-making and scoring with What Ever Happened to Baby Jane when, in 1967, he produced this devastating war action film that served as an influence for Point Blank and Bonnie and Clyde films as it blurred the boundaries between real-world actions by violent men against villainous figures in cinematic representations of war action movies.
The Dirty Dozen tells the tale of an elite squad of criminal misfits sent on a suicide mission to assassinate members of an elite German unit led by Colonel Everett Dasher Breed (Robert Ryan). Their objective isn’t only killing but humiliating them as well, and making Allied military command look good in comparison.
At first glance, it may seem surprising that a movie depicting a group of men as murderous psychopaths would cause controversy today, but in 1967 when society was still grappling with graphic violence it certainly was. The Dirty Dozen set an important precedent with its depiction of Allied soldiers as psychopath killers which later films would follow and which set precedents such as DC Comics adaptation Suicide Squad.
Warner’s Blu-ray release packs an abundance of extras into its disc one release of Dirty Dozen: the Complete Series. These include an in-depth commentary track featuring Jim Brown, Trini Lopez and Stuart Cooper as well as producer Kenneth Hyman and novelist E.M. Nathanson; plus vintage recruitment films narrated by Lee Marvin himself, nine-minute supplemental featurette Operation Dirty Dozen as well as the original theatrical trailer.
The VC-1 encode of this transfer is impressively robust, with vibrant colors and full contrast that jump off the screen. Widescreen images feature crisp detail like in older releases; close-ups of uniform and facial detail are amazing; this edition makes an outstanding showing of one of America’s classic movies that’s often played during Memorial Day/Turkey Day/boys-will-be-boys marathons on cable TV channels like FX. However, what’s lacking here is an enjoyable soundtrack – Warner includes an optional 5.1 surround mix but its quality is poor compared with modern releases;
The Dirty Thirty
The film’s tagline makes clear its mission statement of depicting „the best thirtieth birthday party ever”, and it certainly delivers. Even with its modest budget, this movie does not feel amateurish; there are several truly enjoyable scenes with attractive female leads who all share excellent chemistry, plus Ryan Madison does his part very effectively.
But there are issues with the story, which follows Kate (Mamrie Hart), Charlie (Hannah Hart) and Evie (Grace Helbig). All three women are at various stages in their lives – Kate is single but frustrated in her dead-end job, Charlie is dating but uncertain about it and Evie is married but unhappy and searching for new opportunities.
As Kate receives an elaborate list from her teenage self of things she wishes she’d changed by the time of her 30th birthday, her friends organize an unforgettable party in her honor. Not afraid of showing any kinkiness, these women show off some fantastic performances!
It’s fascinating to observe the way online personalities and stars can translate their clout into mainstream films, though their movies fail to set any new ground or leave an impactful mark other than showing that they can act.
Ashlyn Gere is the star of this film, playing Amanda with such strength and authority that she brings Rosalind Russell’s trademark shoulder pads into play with ease. Sexy, confident, and taking charge, Ashlyn effortlessly turns a bookstore into a sex shop; also successfully seducing both of her husbands: Casper Milquetoast Husband as well as Mike Horner who plays her romantic interest cockily despite their differences in temperament. Additionally Ona Zee delivers lovely smooth performances as always while Mike Horner takes charge with gusto as the guy who falls for her. Mike Horner brings his expertise as the male lead. The other cast members shines, with Ona Zee providing gorgeous smooth performances while Mike Horner plays his cocky charmer role convincingly playing Mike Horner’s role perfectly as her romantic interest who later falls for her. Mike Horner delivers beautifully as her romantic interest who also falls for her as soon after seeing Ona Zee’s performance! Mike Horner comes through strong as usual as Ona Zee becomes pregnant shortly afterwards; both performers stand up smack smack by his lawyer opponent while successfully seducing Casper Milquetoast husband Milquetoast Lawyer Sny Lawyer Slainous lawyer Slainingly Smacking No!
