Simulations of sexual content has long caused stateside audiences to recoil, from Fifty Shades’ wall bashing sex scenes to Skyfall’s shower scene. But now a wave of coming-of-age indie films are taking steps towards adding credibility and authenticity in such scenes.
An effective sex scene begins by serving its story and making sure it serves it in terms of nudity and sexuality. But that does not necessarily entail skipping over nudity altogether.
’Blue Is The Warmest Color’
Abdellatif Kechiche’s 2013 Palme d’Or winner, Adele: An Unconventional Romance is a stunning, unflinching exploration of sexual awakening, desire, and deception. Centering around Adele (Adele Exarchopoulos), an 18-year-old teenage girl struggling to become an adult who feels trapped by sexual repression and emotional scars from previous relationships; all attempts at finding love seem futile until Emma (Lea Seydoux) unexpectedly enters her life; finally her life changes completely with Emma (Lea Seydoux).
Though some have criticised the graphic and unsettling sex scenes in this film, they cannot deny being drawn in by Kechiche’s raw depiction of Adele’s discomfort and pain. Kechiche’s intense direction style reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick required many takes of small scenes before creating an emotionally gripping portrait of woman coming into her own.
’The Sweetest Thing’
Gross-out comedy targeting 20-something women, this crude female-centric flick recycles bits from Cameron Diaz movies like There’s Something About Mary, Charlie’s Angels’ constant lip-syncing in skimpy clothes and her recent hit Any Given Sunday. Director Roger Kumble of Cruel Intentions attempts to capitalize on Diaz’s popularity by recycling as much of her previous work into this muddled flick as possible, attempting to be original like Nancy Pimental from TV’s South Park who also attempted this script which ultimately failed both times due its overt tastelessness.
One of the few redeeming qualities in this film is its stellar cast, including Diaz herself as well as Christina Applegate and Selma Blair who play her closest confidants during an alluring road trip movie. All three actors possess outstanding talents that only help enhance the film. Unfortunately, even this cannot make up for its predictable plot or underwhelming characters.
Women constantly flirt with men, yet their attraction goes deeper than mere enjoyment. Joe can’t resist Amy’s magnetic sexual attraction even as he desperately attempts to save his crumbling marriage; though aware he shouldn’t pursue her, Joe pursues Amy anyway.
Parents must be wary about exposing their kids to this movie due to its adult themes; there is plenty of foul language and sexual references; this should be noted before allowing their kids to see this flick; although acting performance is good, this cannot make up for its lackluster plot.
’The Devil Wears Prada’
Beth B is a masterful multi-disciplinary artist renowned for her groundbreaking, stylistically adventurous films that seduce both eye and mind. These films explore themes related to sexual desire, justice, gender identity and more with an emotional intimacy rarely found in modern cinema.
Fashion movies rarely capture the current climate like Lauren Weisberger’s cutting, self-aware satire. Unfortunately, this year’s slow musical adaptation with script written by Kate Wetherhead and score composed by Elton John falls far short of meeting that standard.
’Pleasure’

Each episode sheds more light on this concept which plays such an integral part of human existence and well-being – yet is often underestimated by society. This series serves to raise awareness and educate about its power!
Unfortunately, filmmaking today simply cannot match up to what was produced back in the late ’70s/early ’80s in terms of adult movies – the acting was superb, stories captivating, and many contained sizzling sexual encounters!
This film depicts life at an earlier point when homosexuality was still taboo – when high school cheerleader was sent to reparative therapy camp to cure her homosexuality, but instead fell in love with another camper and explored sexuality more. A touching depiction of gay life.
